Charisma - do you have it?

Charisma comes from the Greek root word, �Charis�, which means �grace or gift�. The belief is that the gods breathe into you, a special spirit. Charisma is an energy that can have a positive effect, or a highly disruptive negative impact. It attracts jealousy, and in extreme cases even loathing, from those who don�t have it. If it�s resident as a spark, it can be fanned into a flame. If it�s not there � well, it isn�t ever going to be!

I was talking about charisma on radio one night. Saying pretty much what I�ve said here. Someone called me on my mobile phone literally the minute I left the studio, to ask, �Do you think I have charisma?� I obeyed the Eastern dictum of �tell the truth in the way that commits least injury�, and replied with a non-answer, along the lines of, �Your patients love you � you must have some charisma.� What went through my mind though, was that if as an adult, you have to phone someone to ask if you have charisma, the answer is pretty self-evident.

You may however, like my young goddaughter, be unaware that you have charisma. And like her, be sincerely amazed at the degree of competitiveness, antagonism or hostility your energy-shifting presence causes in some circles. When people are deeply conservative, intellectually or emotionally constrained and restrained, they will frequently, if not always, interpret the impact of your charisma as a negative, threatening, dislocating force.

Good leaders all have charisma. It�s what attracts people to them. �Spellbinding, enthralling, captivating, riveting�, are words that are often used to describe a charismatic person. Repelling people is the occasional opposite and negative effect of charisma.

Charisma isn�t necessarily explicit, loud, vibrant or visible. It may be a quiet, compelling force emanating from someone with unobtrusive behaviour, speech or mannerisms. I�m reminded of a worldwide ad agency group CEO, speaking to us years ago on a training program. His was such a quiet but compelling, presence. He spoke softly - sometimes so softly you almost had to strain to hear him. But you absolutely couldn�t � and didn�t � want to ignore him. Not because of his position, or power, but because of his presence.

Nelson Mandela�s birth name reflected in advance that he would have it � Rolihlala in isiXhosa, means �he who stirs up trouble.� In this case of an extremely positive kind! �Brother Leader�, the quixotic and seriously daft Muammar Gaddafi, has it. Adolph Hitler had it in evil bucket loads. Clinton has it, Tony Blair hasn�t. Maggie Thatcher has it, John Major doesn�t. Golda Meir had it, Ariel Sharon doesn�t. It�s something that leaps out of your television set. Love �em or hate �em, you�ll notice when they have it.

Tim Sikyea, a native Canadian medicine man, described the gift of healing being given to someone, like this: �When you are given the gift of healing, the Wise Ones put a beetle in your stomach. The beetle feeds on the pain and suffering of other people. The day you stop feeding the beetle with the suffering of others, it starts to consume you.�

What we often see in charismatic individuals is that they forget the gift is in trust and for the benefit of others. Accompanying personal magnetism, comes great responsibility. When people use the force for self-adulation, the beetle starts its slow work. The gift will drive them mad, or it will become a force for evil. You will remember the medium, and miss the message.

If you�re aware that you have charisma, treat it like a radioactive isotope that has been put in your trust - with respect and awareness of its power to heal or harm � depending on how it is applied.

Charisma doesn�t require good looks, height, a great voice or some other distinctive feature. It is its own driving force � independent of other attributes, which often have to function in concert, to have an impact.

But it�s almost a given, that the day someone with charisma walks through the door, the organization will mount an �immune system response�. It sets out to crush or kill the �invading� foreign organism or bacterium, overwhelm it, and pull it into line with �normal� cellular function. By taking all the steps necessary to remove all the dissatisfying factors in your work environment, you can prevent the unnecessary loss of intrinsic motivation due to short-term dissatisfaction. Learning and applying all the factors of satisfying or motivating employees to yourself will help create the long-term intrinsic motivation to maintain a positive attitude and productive work for yourself.

Devote some time to examining all the aspects of your own work environment - the conditions of where you do your work. Remove or decrease as many of the dissatisfying elements in your work environment as you can. Look for ways to eliminate as much "pain" from your workplace as possible. Then you can begin to increase the ways in which you reward yourself with satisfying elements of your work.

By taking the lessons of workplace motivation and satisfaction and using them as a model for your own work, no matter where it takes place, you increase the chances of maintaining and increasing your intrinsic motivation to persevere.

Defining Motivation and Powerful Methods of Motivating Yourself and Other People n

No matter whether you want to motivate others or yourself, the same challenge must be met: getting from inaction to positive action. Even negative action is a better starting point than lack of action.

Directing and leading action is always easier when there is at least some motion. Starting from a "dead stop", or total inaction, requires an injection of energy that is so powerful that even the most apathetic person feels roused to action.

To motivate is to move to action, either by an incentive, moral force or both together. The actual application of the force or energy to cause action requires an understanding of who, what, when, where and why motivation works. Here's a key to understanding motivation - all motivation is self-motivation. While someone else may provide a carefully tailored approach to motivate others, those others can only become motivated through their own mind, emotions and physical actions.

This is where a sound understanding of the root cause of motivation is vital. Before you can motivate others, you must master self-motivation. True motivation comes from a clear vision of a desired outcome, combined with a passionate emotional desire that cannot be diverted, quenched or denied. Unless a person has a detailed, focused picture of an end result that creates enthusiasm, motivation will not endure.

Once you develop the skills of making clearly defined end goals and values, and building a passionate desire to achieve them, you will then be able to learn how to spread that motivation to others. Unless and until you can incorporate the necessary focus and fire within yourself, motivating others will be difficult or impossible without the use of force, fear or threats. That sort of motivation never endures.

True motivation is a habit, developed by persistence and action. At the beginning, a person's motivation is a conscious act that requires applied will power and repetition. After a while, the repeated action and feeling become unconscious or automatic. Anyone who has been trained in war knows that repeated forced acts of courage can make a warrior of a common man. In the same way, repeated acts of nearly any behavior or emotion can be made into an unbreakable habit.

In the end, motivation is the end result of a thought - a clear thought that is filled with emotion and acted upon persistently, repeatedly and faithfully. "First the man makes the thought, then the thought makes the man." That is motivation.

Are you Motivated?

Dictionaries define motivation as something (as a need or desire) that causes a person to act. We can define motivation as a motive for taking action; a reason to act. The word motivation in it's Latin form, "motus" means motion which implies some kind of movement and that motivation is a verb - it is something you DO.

This is critically important when we set about accomplishing a goal. Without motivation no goal can be accomplished. In order to define motivation we need to discover and define the desire that lead us to want the goal in the first place. It is equally important to know that feeling motivated is an emotion that acts as an incitement to action. Without positive constructive action towards the attainment of a goal it remains a desire and a dream.

We can also define motivation as something that inspires us. Weather it be a goal or an ambition, an amazing story, a defeat or a great achievement. The key is to realize what causes us to feel motivated? It is the fact that inspiration gives us reasons or motives within ourselves to pursue a certain goal. Anthony Robbins once said that "Giant Goals produce Giant Motivation." The first step then in pursuing a goal is to know exactly what you are after. The more clarity you have as to exactly what you want, the easier it will be for you to attain it. Clarity as to your specific outcome in itself will motivate you because you will start building a clear image in your mind and imagination. The closer you get to your goal the clearer the image will become.

Knowing what you want is not enough in achieving a goal. The most important aspect is to define motivation for yourself. In other words you need to define your motive, your reason for pursuing the goal. You need to have enough and strong enough reasons as to why you absolutely must attain your goal. If your reasons (motive) are strong enough motivation is automatic and consequently you will keep taking action towards attaining your goal. It is actions that produce the results in our lives and pulls us into the direction we want to go.

If you want to define motivation for yourself in such a way as to unleash an unstoppable force of momentum towards attaining your dreams, then you need to develop passion. Passion is a combination of loves and hates. It is finding reasons why you love to attain your goal and reasons why you hate not having it. Passion is reasons infused with emotion and emotion is the strongest force in determining your destiny. If you feel passionate about something then motivation is automatic. The good news is that passion is not something you are born with or something that you get "some day." It is something you develop and you will soon find out that on the highway to achieving your dreams your reasons keep building on top of each other and becomes stronger along the way.

If you find it hard to define motivation for yourself I would recommend listening to or reading something every day that creates that emotion of motivation within you. Motivational audio books can help to motivate you. There are some brilliant personal development experts that know exactly what it takes to motivate people through an understanding of the human mind. They will help you find lasting reasons within yourself to take action and move towards attaining your dreams and desires. No matter what it takes, make sure you get off your butt and get motivated. It is the only way you will get from where you are to where you want to be.

"I'm not someone who is motivated by money", said an attorney who was in one of my workshops. His comment was his reason for not doing the marketing he knew he needed to be doing. It is hard to gear up to do something when you can't visualize a compelling reason to do it. His point was that he just didn't get around to doing things he knew he "should" do but really didn't want to do. Still his practice wasn't growing so the issue is how does he motivate himself?

Some people use money as the score card for success. If they are earning more than the vast majority they feel good. We usually call a person like that very competitive because he or she is motivated by winning. Not everyone is motivated in this way however. One person who is motivated in this way is Jack Welch former CEO of GE and co-author with his wife Suzy Welch of the book Winning. (Appropriate title!)

In a recent issue of Business Week Jack and Suzy Welch wrote a response to a question posed by a reader who asks, "In our business, the biggest challenge we have today is motivating our people. What is the best way to do that?" Their response was: "Besides money, you mean? We assume you do, because as a boss, you surely have seen how effective money is in lighting a motivational fire - even in employees who claim money doesn't matter to them. Indeed, money's power to energize people is so tried and true we won't dwell on it." The Welches go on to say that maybe some people aren't motivated by financial reward but those people usually don't gravitate toward business.

This kind of assumption makes me see red! First it assumes that people are all motivated by the same thing - money. Sure I think the vast majority of people can be motivated by money to a point. They want to provide a comfortable living for themselves and their families. Of course everyone has a different definition of "comfortable living" so for some money is a motivator for a long time. Once a person gets to their own threshold of "comfortable living" however what makes them want to continue to work on a project or their own practice? These are the true motivators and they come from within each person.

According to Ginny O'Brien, author of Coaching Yourself to Leadership, her research shows that men are motivated by career development, professional recognition, and financial compensation, while women were motivated by relationships, quality of customer focus, and communication with colleagues. According to their Business Week article therefore it seems Jack and Suzy Welch think then that women would not "gravitate toward business." In a sense using money as the carrot is a subtle discriminatory practice.

One aspect to leadership that O'Brien talks about is having a deep understanding of self. This is part of what is called emotional intelligence. Knowing what motivates you is one aspect of understanding yourself. Wouldn't it be wonderful if business leaders got this? The major responsibility of finding your motivators is yours but how helpful it would be if managers coached employees with the goal of helping the employee find his or her key motivators.

It is important to differentiate internal from external motivators. Someone who is internally motivated finds the feelings within him or herself that really ignite passion. External motivators would be something outside the person like money and other tangible recognition methods. The external ones provide a burst of energy but don't have sustainability.

What if companies provided a questionnaire to all new employees on their first day to determine if they knew what motivated them? The questionnaire might list lots of external motivators and have a question about internal ones too. Now if someone asked you those questions on your first day in the office, wouldn't you think you had found the perfect place to work?! Of course the manager would need to follow through with appropriate coaching and rewards.

It is important to remember that a manager's role is to create an environment in which the employee works effectively, creatively and productively so the business makes a profit. In that kind of environment employees have the freedom to explore what motivates them and the trust in their manager so that they share their findings.

Being self motivating is of course ideal but that can only happen when an employee is given the space and encouragement to figure it out for him/herself. If managers assume that one size fits all, they limit the possibilities of the business.

Take Action

1. Start with yourself. What motivates you? Take a piece of paper and write a story about a time when you were driven to keep working on something. The work was so engaging you would have done it without pay. See if you can determine what it was about the work that pulled you.

How To Quit Smoking With NLP & Hypnosis For Motivation

There are two mental states that must be satisfied before a person will voluntarily quit smoking. These elements are called "Desire," and "Decision."

Desire: A want, crave or a wish for
Decision: Making up of one's mind / a verdict or judgment

In order to quit smoking, you have to desire to quit. You have to want to quit. You probably want to quit, at least some part of you does, or you wouldn't be reading this article.

In order to quit smoking, you have to decide to quit. Since you haven't quit smoking, it simply means that you have not decided to quit... yet. So what you need is to feel motivated to make a "decision" to quit smoking.

Motivation, we all need it. The source of each of our motivations is a belief. Think about it, if you did not believe that you could get hurt if you walked in front of moving traffic, you would not feel motivated to be careful. If you did not believe that the gnawing sensation in your stomach meant that you were hungry, you would not feel motivated to eat.

When it comes to giving up the smoking habit, people need to feel a great deal of motivation to make the decision to quit. Motivation is based on the ideas that we believe. So you will need to figure out what ideas will motivate you (when you start to believe them). Because when you feel powerfully motivated, you will quit smoking.

Thanks to NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) and hypnosis for motivation, it's a lot easier to learn how to believe these new ideas than you probably think it is. However, you do not believe the ideas that will motivate you to quit smoking at this point, or you would have already broken the smoking addiction.

For the purpose of this discussion, we need to define a few words.

Doubt: Uncertain/distrustful/dubious - "maybe it's this way, and maybe it isn't."

Belief: Trust/faith/tenet - A state of mind devoid of all doubt. In other words, belief means, "this is the way that it is."

Highly valued criteria: What is most important to you, as an individual.

When you totally believe that if you continue to smoke, your highly valued criterion is in jeopardy, you will feel the motivation that you require to stop smoking. We call this is a negative motivator, because it's a belief that motivates you by giving you bad feelings. Negative motivators are very powerful.

When you believe that if you do quit, your highly valued criteria will become enhanced, you will also feel the motivation that you require to quit smoking. This is a positive motivator, because it motivates you by promising good feelings if you stop smoking.

The first task is for you to figure out what the most important things in your life are? Your most highly valued criteria are usually intangibles. For example: Money would not be highly valued criteria, but the freedom, fun, or security that money can provide would be. Write your list of highly valued criteria down on a piece of paper.

Next you need to figure out what you need to believe to feel motivated to quit. Here is the good news, sort of: Logic has nothing to do with belief. Things don't have to be logical for you to believe them. As a matter of fact, they rarely are. So forget logic!

The format for your negative motivator beliefs will be: "I believe that if I continue to smoke, something bad will happen to my most highly valued criteria."

Make sure that you frame your motivators in the positive. In other words, always state what you want or what will happen. Never state what you don't want or what won't happen. Eliminate the "not" word from the beliefs.

In this example we will say that your children's welfare is your most highly valued criteria.

Wrong: "I believe that if I continue to smoke, I won't be doing my kids health any good."

Correct: "I believe that if I continue to smoke, my secondhand smoke will ruin my children's health."

Next, create a list of positive motivators. "I believe that if I quit smoking: (something very important will be enhanced)."

Wrong: "I believe that if I stop smoking, I won't harm my kids health."

Correct: "I believe that if I quit smoking, my children will be healthier because I'll eliminate their exposure to the dangers of my second hand smoke."

The next step is to modify the computer codes in your brain to make yourself actually believe these motivational ideas. Now for a shocker: Belief has nothing to do with logic or reality. But it does have everything to do with your perception of reality. In other words, it has a lot to do with the way that we see things.

Our belief systems are based in our unconscious mind. The unconscious is like a computer. Computers don't reason. The input controls the output. To demonstrate, I want you to think of anything that you already believe without the slightest bit of doubt. Make it a belief that makes you feel good.

For instance, it's easy for most people to believe that they love their children. If that is true for you, make a mental image that makes you feel that love.

I'm going to ask some questions, and there aren't any right or wrong answers. Is your mental image a moving picture, or a still?

Is it in color, or in black and white?
Is it close or far?
Is it focused or fuzzy?
Is it normally bright, overly bright, or dim?
Is there a border on it?
Is it borderless?
Is it a panorama?

Whatever your answers are, write them down. These are the computer codes that your unconscious uses to indicate your feelings of belief. In this case they are the codes for positive belief because you've chosen a belief that gives you a good feeling. You have just calibrated your positive belief.

All positive belief pictures are bright and focused. If yours aren't, you probably don't really have total belief. You probably have an element of doubt. So find another belief from which to calibrate.

If you think of something that you doubt, and you make a mental image of it, one or more of these computer codes will probably be different. Similarly, if you have a belief that gives you a bad feeling, (a negative belief): one or more of those codes will be different.

In NLP we call these particular computer codes visual submodalities.

Now you will need to calibrate a negative belief. So repeat the same exact process, but do so using an idea that you already believe, that makes you feel bad.

Once you have calibrated your positive and your negative beliefs, it's a simple matter to manipulate what you believe so you can motivate yourself to decide to quit.

So, to summarize, using the above example: "I believe that if I continue to smoke, my secondhand smoke will ruin my children's health."

1. Sense how motivated you feel to quit smoking.

2. Make a mental image that illustrated the above belief.

3. Adjust the computer codes (visual submodalities) of the image to match the submodalities from your calibrated negative belief.

4. If you are right handed, move your eyeballs (and your image) up to your left and hold it there for five seconds. If you are left handed, to the opposite. This will help you to quickly memorize the belief.

5. Now sense how motivated you feel to quit smoking. Do you feel more motivated? Less motivated? Or the same?

Using this technique you can make yourself believe almost anything by making a picture in your mind that illustrates your new idea and then adjusting your mental image to match your calibrated belief pictures.

And if you have a belief that is holding you back, you can use the same technique to change that belief to doubt by changing one or two of the submodalities and memorizing it that way.

Now that you can motivate yourself to decide to quit, you will quit smoking. A decision to quit means: I'm quitting no matter how much it hurts. If you are like most people, you won't want it to "hurt," and it doesn't have to. There are several hypnotic techniques that can greatly reduce, or even completely eliminate the discomforts of withdrawal from the cigarette addiction.

The Motive of Motivation

Motivation is an individual's desire or enthusiasm for a particular goal. For instance, if Jane asks John to run down to the market to get their groceries, the achievement of that particular goal set by Jane for John is highly dependent on how motivated John is to accomplish that fact. If John perceives the task of going for groceries to be inconvenient, chances are he will be demotivated to take on the chore and it won't get done.

Even if John decides to get the groceries, he may do so with much delay and with no enthusiasm that he may not do a very good job of picking up the groceries. Despite this though, if the fear of acquiring Jane's wrath is stronger than John's perceived inconvenience for actually taking on the task then chances are, John will be highly motivated to accomplish the task and he will do so with the right competence. Whatever the case may be, you will realize from this simple example that motivation is a temporal state of mind and is absolutely not a character trait.

An individual's motivation toward something is always a result of a complex decision making procedure that can take only a split second for our minds to process. Although you will hear people refer to some people as highly motivated individuals as compared to others, this usually means that, that particular individual is highly motivated to succeed in terms of how society defines success. The fact that another individual may not be motivated toward the same goals doesn't mean that, that person is not motivated at all. In fact, that individual who lacks the drive to succeed based on societal norms "fails" not because he is not motivated, but because he is indeed highly motivated to achieve the opposite.

So you see, motivation is intrinsic in each individual. The fact that one may be demotivated towards one thing means he is motivated towards an opposite end. Everyone is motivated all the time. Parents and employers are on the constant quest to motivate their children and employees, respectively.

With children, parents may decide to use coercion, positive reinforcement or whatever other method available to them, to motivate their children toward a certain behavior. An employer will offer his employees with attractive employment packages that will continue to motivate the workers to perform well and be productive all the time. It is in the fact that we are conditioned to see motivation as something external that gets us into trouble.

For instance, we often blame another individual, entity or institution for our lack of motivation. We blame our spouse or partner for not being a certain way, therefore unable to provide us the motivation we need to stay in the relationship. We also blame our employers for our unproductive behavior, claiming that work conditions are the cause of poor job performance.

The truth of the matter is, no matter what the case is, we are responsible for our own motivations. We should never resort to blame or any negative over emotion because this affects our clarity. This lack of clarity affects our ability to decide the outcome of our motivations. Sometimes we get motivated towards something for the wrong reason and this behavior serves us more harm than good. Motivation is a human tool for self development and actualization and should be used accordingly.
